Ronald Teasley Sr., Former Negro Leagues Outfielder and Northwestern High School Coach, Dies at 99 – With profound sadness, the Detroit community mourns the passing of Ronald Teasley Sr., a true local legend, at the age of 99. More than just a former professional baseball outfielder, he was a cherished pillar of Northwestern High School—a loving coach, teacher, and mentor who shaped countless young lives.

A native son, Teasley’s own journey began at Northwestern before he excelled in baseball and basketball at Wayne State University. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he pursued a professional baseball career during the integration era. Following a release from a Dodgers farm club, he played for the famed New York Cubans of the Negro Leagues in 1948, later competing in the Mandak League.

Yet, his greatest impact was felt back home. For decades, Coach Teasley was a staple at Northwestern, returning to guide future generations with the same dedication he displayed on the field. He embodied resilience, integrity, and a deep commitment to community.

Our thoughts are with his wife and daughter, his unwavering rocks throughout an incredible century-long journey. The Detroit baseball community and all who knew him have lost a pioneering spirit and a gentle giant. His legacy as an athlete and educator will forever be a part of the city’s fabric. Arrangements will be shared when available.
